THREE GOOD FRIENDS

One bright spring day when blossoms quivered in the gentle breeze, and colourful daffodils, freesias and snowdrops adorned gardens, three friends walked along the sidewalk , amiably chatting together.

Fact, Faith and Feelings.

You could always trust Fact, because you were certain that what she said was true.

Faith usually agreed with her, although on some occasions she was rather inclined to listen to Feelings. Feelings, unfortunately , had her ups and downs, so she was neither consistent nor reliable. And this day she seemed rather despondent, probably with her hormones out of kilter. So Feelings began to lag behind her friends.

‘Come along, Feelings’, beckoned Faith. ‘Keep up with us,’ as she encouraged feelings to rejoin her and Fact.

‘It is going to rain. Look at that grey cloud over there,’ hesitated Feelings. ‘I think I’ll go home.’ And she began to turn away.

Fact was ready with the truth. ‘ Remember the forecast assured us of a fine day with no rain. Come on,’ she coaxed, ‘Let’s enjoy ourselves.’ She took Faith’s hand, and encouraged her to hold the hand of Feelings. Sadly, Feelings jerked away, and shrugged her shoulders in unbelief.

‘I really think it will rain,’ she said, eyeing that one grey cloud. ‘Besides, my legs are starting to ache, and that’s a sure sign of rain. Anyway, I do not belief that forecast. You cannot be sure, and if it rains, I might catch a cold.’

In vain the two friends tried to persuade Feelings. But Feelings was determined. She sighed, turned away, while Faith and Fact sadly shook their heads.

Faith hesitated. Feelings might be right. She looked up at that grey cloud. Should she follow Feelings? For a moment Faith, too, wavered, murmuring to herself.

‘Perhaps Feelings is right after all. You do need to be careful.’

Fact watched Faith hesitate, then quickly assured her.

‘You must believe the evidence, Faith. It is there in black and white, ‘Fine day. No rain expected’ ‘ persuaded Fact, sure of her information.

‘How can you believe that?’ questioned Faith.

‘Well, the weatherman knows the signs of the weather; he understands the wind; the cloud formation; the air currents; and his word is accurate. ‘ But you must believe him’.

For one moment, Faith hesitated. Who was right, Moody Feelings, or trustworthy Fact.

Then Fact spoke, sincerely but firmly to Faith and Feelings, her two friends.

‘Come, walk with me. You can trust me. Faith, grasp my hand firmly, then you take Feelings’ hand, and as we walk together, there is nothing to fear.’

And that is how the three friends became inseparable.
