MOULDY SHOES
I was excited
at the invitation to meet the President of Indonesia, and honoured to receive
it. We wanted to dress in our best
clothes.
So we carefully
brought them out of the cupboards, choosing our best shoes. I brought my special ones out of a box for this
special occasion. But, oh, you should have seen them, covered in thick, green,
offensive mould, with rotted insoles.
Added to that, a fat cockroach crawled out,
which I crunched, grinding it with my shoe.
What a sight!
My best shoes reserved for special occasions.
My friends had warned
how readily clothes rotted and moulded in the hot, moist, tropical
climate. Sadly, I neglected their
advice.
Strangely,
mould did not affect my working, everyday clothes and shoes: only the best
shoes, reserved for special occasions. I
learned a lesson not to keep clothes for special occasions. I wore them as often as possible.
Can you learn
my lesson, too?
Some people are
special-occasion Christians. They may go to church on Sundays. Or Sunday
School, but they do not live as Christians on Monday. Their lives are no
different from non-believers. They are
like my best, mouldy shoes. No good use for God for the rest of the week.
God wants to
use you every day. He wants you to live constantly for Him. We are happiest when we are serving the Lord
Jesus all the time.
James 2; verse
2 tells us that ‘Faith without works is dead. ‘(Believing without working is no
use at all).
Working and
serving our Lord go hand in hand with faith, showing our love for our Saviour
and Lord.
