WATER FROM OUR JAVA WELL
It’s so
convenient to turn on a tap with water gushing out. Our water came from a deep well, about 12 metres
(14 yards ) deep. When I looked over
the low wall surrounding the well, it seemed that there was only one metre (yard)
of water in the well, for I could see the bottom clearly.
Later that
afternoon, the tropical rain fell- heavy, pounding, saturating; with many
inches falling in a few hours. I thought
that the well must be filled with all that rain.
But when I
looked, the well was still partly filled, just as before. One metre deep. I was
disappointed and surprised, asking one of the servants the reason.
He laughed,
telling me that the water soaked through the sand at the bottom of the well. ‘Won’t
the water soak away, leaving the well dry?’ I questioned.
’No,’ he
emphasised, ‘As long as the river is flowing, it will provide water for the
well.’ While not knowing the mechanics, they knew its working.
I thought of
the mighty, overflowing river, only 200 metres from our home. We could hear it roaring as it plunged along
to the sea. As fast as we drew from our
well, water soaked through the soil from the river back into our well.
Our well,
therefore, was always safe. As far as I could see, we would never lack
water. God provided every village home
in Java with their own life-saving well.
Jesus is the
Water of life. HE is the deep, deep well: one that can never run dry. As often
as we get help from the Lord Jesus (He is our well); He has plenty more.
Father and
Mother need to know that, too, for when troubles and worries come, the Lord is
their Helper. He never disappears or is depleted -, that is, runs low or dry.
There is a
beautiful promise in Revelation 22, verse 17,’ And whosoever will, let him take
the water of life freely.’
