Dear Editor
Only one Mediator. .
As a bible-believing Christian, I object to the TV commentary that Pope Benedict was an intermediary between God and man. Neither the Christian leaders nor the press disclaimed the claim.
This challenging statement contradicts the Holy Bible which states, in 1 Timothy chapter 2 verse 5, ‘There is One God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.’ Such a Mediator
Must possess deity and humanity., being perfect God and entire man. This excludes the head of every church, whether Roman Catholic, Church of England, Baptist, Uniting, Assemblies of God, Presbyterian , or ethnic churches. God’s Word also states, ‘My glory will I not give to another, nor My praise to earthen vessels.’ Such a claim robs The Son of God of His glory.
To claim to be Arbitrator, conciliator, go-between or mediator challenges the unique role of the Son of God as true God and true Man. No man can usurp that authority. That blasphemes the Holy Bible as God’s word.
Job chapter 9 rules out a human mediator as feasible, for He must be a righteous or holy human, for he wrote, ‘how can a man be righteous before God?’ In Christ’s holiness,( no man should bear this title) the Lord Jesus challenged, claiming ’who convicts me of sin? No one ! . The Lord Jesus is omniscient, for Job contended, ‘God is wise in heart and mighty in strength‘;. Indeed, He is omniscient. No man can usurp His illimitable wisdom. Job shows how his God is the Creator, for ’All things were made by Him and without Him was not anything made that was made.’ Job showed how the heavens are the work of His hands, naming ‘the Bear, orion, and the Pleiades. Indeed, He does great things past finding out, yes, wonders without number.’ v10. Only One person can fill these criteria, even our princely Lord Jesus. : Certainly mere flesh could not put the heavens in their place, with awe -inspiring dimensions..
Chapter 9 continues as a direct response to this blasphemous claim that one man is an Arbitrator between God and man: ‘For he is not a man as I am, that I may answer Him, and that we should go to court together. Nor is there any mediator between us, who may lay His hand on us both.’ God’s Word is conclusive. He further reasons, ‘Let Him take His rod away from me, and do not let dread of Him terrify me, then I would speak and not fear Him, but it is not so with me.’v33
Virgin birth and prophetic accumulation from old Testament.
This special person must have an unchangeable priesthood to be Arbitrator between God and man. Hebrews 7:25 describes such a Person, ‘He is able to save to the uttermost those who come unto God through Him, since He ever lives ( He is the source of eternal life, Who once was dead ) to make intercession for them.’ Concerning that unique intercession , ‘Such a high priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens.’
Christ alone qualifies, while all men are hopelessly incompetent. He saves us by His precious shed blood, and makes us children of God, but He stands alone, ‘as the heavens are high above the earth’!
