SONGS IN PRISON

Two men, Paul and Silas in prison were thrown,

They were put in the chains and left all alone.

The prisoners’ singing showed they weren’t downcast,

But the listening jailers said, ‘This will not last.’

Have you ever heard of a song coming from men

Who were cast in a dark, dingy, foul prison den.

But they were God’s servants, whom He chose for a purpose

And willing, glad workers for all of God’s service.

Paul and Silas knew God would be with them in jail,

They faithfully praise Him for He never fails.

But suddenly at midnight they heard loud noises

‘An earthquake, an earthquake,’ called prisoners’ scared voices.

The prison guard thought he should beat himself dead,

For he feared for his life if the prisoners all fled.

But Paul shouted aloud, ‘To yourself do no harm.

We prisoners are here, ’there’s no cause for alarm.’

The guard became frightened, but Paul acted so kind

That he asked him a question long since on his mind.

To Paul the guard said, ‘What must I do to be saved?’

‘Believe on the Lord Jesus’, was the answer Paul gave.

Imagine the joy on the prison guard’s face

As he and his family all accepted God’s grace.

They trusted in Jesus that dark midnight hour

For in Silas and Paul’s life they observed God’s great power.

The prison guard washed Paul and Silas’ backs,

For in prison he had beaten and lashed them with straps.

In the hard dark prison Paul and Silas sang songs,

Which encouraged the jailer to turn from his wrongs.

And when you live for Jesus His praises you will sing –

Even now use your voices and let your songs ring,

For you may bring someone to Jesus today

By the songs that you sing as you go on your way.

Question: Why were Paul and Silas not afraid in prison?
