THE WORD MADE FLESH- AND DWELT AMONG
US. John 1.
‘In the
beginning was the WORD and the word was with God and the word was God.
(v1) The ‘word ‘ means ‘Christ, the
wisdom and power of God and the first cause of all things, God’s personal
expression of Himself to men.’ (Living bible)
‘Before
anything else existed, there was Christ.
The entire Old Testament has many references to Christ, for example the
intricacies of the tabernacle tell of the nature of the Christ. In Psalm22-we read of the cross sufferings;
while in psalm 23, Christ is the Good shepherd; while in Psalm 24 He wears the
eternal Crown.
His
pre-existence is boldly affirmed; ’The
same was in the beginning with God.
Who is not
reluctant to tell of this feature of the Son? The O.T. has many of His
appearances. ‘Thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though you be little among the
thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth unto Me One that is
to be ruler (governor) in Israel, whose goings forth (appearances) have been of
old, from everlasting.’ God had chosen the city, the ruler, and His triumphant
coming to the Father; after accomplishing the cross and resurrection from the
dead. He is omniscient.
We cannot
mistake His eternal nature, for He claimed, ‘Before Abraham was, I AM.’ (John
8:58), The Pharisees were infuriated at His correct claim, believing that that
this assertion insulted Abraham. ’ Even though later, Christ stated that
‘Abraham rejoiced to see His day.’ WE
certainly do.
His high
priestly prayer in John 17 lifts some of the mystery of the oneness with the
Father, as He cried, ’Now, O Father, glorify Me with your own self with the
glory which I had with you before the world existed. (v5) How our beloved Lord longed to be re-clothed
with that Shekinah or heavenly radiance.
He continued in
verse 24, ’Father, I will that they also whom You have given Me, be with me
where I am; that they may behold My glory, which You have given Me; for you
loved Me before the foundation of the world.’ Our Saviour yearned for His bride
(the true church) to be flooded with His wonderful, eternal brilliance. As we linger with the glories of heaven, so
we counter the pull of this evil day
-As a medical
doctor, I love the profound theme of creation from our beneficent Creator. ‘All
things were made by Him and without Him nothing was made that was made. ‘(v3)
Excellent truth in 1 Corinthians 8;6 reads, ‘ There is only one God, of whom
are all things, and we live for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom
are all things, and through Whom we live.’
All things originate in Christ Jesus and are preserved through Him. Such simple faith frees us to accept the
intricacies of His glorious creation, knowing personally the Author of our
faith.
Solomon, the
wisest man who has lived expanded energetically on creation,
’The Lord
possessed me at the beginning of the way. Before His works of old.
I have been
established from everlasting from the beginning. Before there was ever an
earth. Before the mountains were
settled, before the hills, I was brought forth. When He prepared the heavens, I
was there. When He established the clouds above,
When He marked
out the foundations of the earth. Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman,
( sublime modesty in the light of creation’s intricacies ) and I was daily His
delight rejoicing always before Him. ( intimate fellowship with the Father )
And My delight was with the sons of men.’ (Proverbs 8:22-31) God loved the
world.
Paul wrote in
Ephesians 3:9, ‘ That You would make all men see what is the fellowship of the
mystery which from the beginning of the world has been hid in God, who created
all things by Jesus Christ.’ There
can be no exception when Scripture says ‘all things,’ which silences the
muffled voice of science, unwilling to acknowledge His creative large-scale and
micro structures.
In
Colossians1:16, Paul wrote, ‘All things were created by Him in heaven and in
earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions, principalities and
powers ; all things were created by Him, and for Him. ‘ His immeasurable
workmanship included heaven and earth; indeed, every realm of God’s sphere and
man’s influence; and all created by the Lord for His glory and credit. HE is the Word.
In the
beginning of the Hebrew letter, 1:2. We read,’ God has in these last days
spoken unto us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, by whom
also he made the worlds.’ God the Father chose
His beloved, only Son, to whom He delegated the creation of the worlds.
Our Lord should be magnified for His astonishing creation of the earthly,
astronomical, and nautical spheres. How
vast His innovative mastermind. Scripture simply states, ‘All things were made
by Him’.
The Lord
claimed to be ‘The Light of the world.’ John said, ‘In Him was life and that
life was the light of men.’(v4) Isaiah
wrote,’ The people who walked in darkness have seen a great Light; those who
dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them has Light shone. (9:2) The converted walk in His brilliance.
‘Paul wrote,
‘For God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness has shone in our
hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of
Jesus Christ.’ (2 Cor 4:6) In all our
family and friendship relationships , we enjoy the magnificence of His
enlightened Presence. No grey areas exist, or shady spots in the precious
fellowship of His Son.
In the
Revelation, John told how, ‘The city had no need of the sun or the moon to
shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it, and the Lamb is its light.
(21:23 ). So the new Jerusalem glows
with the glory of the One, who is the Word
and the Lamb of God. The incarnation of Jesus Christ made way for His
Calvary suffering, to bring us to God.
The great truths of the bible are harmoniously married.
