THE BASIS FOR CHRISTIAN FAITH IN THE LAW OF MOSES DEUT 6.

We anticipate when ‘Your son asks you in time to come, saying, ’what is the meaning of the testimonies, statutes and judgments which the Lord our God has commanded you?’(v20) We parents must encourage healthy questions concerning our great Saviour, Who prompted our children to enquire concerning His ways. .

Tell them ‘We were slaves of Pharoah in Egypt’. (21) Without free will, opportunity to enjoy life, or develop as God intended. The slave masters cracked the whips over our backs, biting into the flesh. We fashioned the bricks of Egyptian soil, without the straw to hold them together. The stubble cut our hands to ribbons. Worse than that, satan was ruthless in driving us deeper into slavery of sin, ‘for he who commits sin is the servant of sin’. Only God could free the Israelites – and us.

‘The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand’. Their Lord was omnipotent (all-powerful). The Bible summarises the events that led to this marvellous freeing, namely, the shedding of the blood of the Passover lamb, and the consequent protection from the judging hand of the righteous God. It includes the mysterious rolling back of the Red Sea waters with pillars of water held in vertical columns, while 2 ½ million men, women, children safely crossed. The same waters swamped the Egyptian motorised columns as they recklessly followed.

Our Lord Jesus freed us from the realm of rebellion with His delivering hand.

‘The Lord showed signs and wonders before our eyes, great and severe against Egypt, Pharoah and all his household. (v22) Moses referred to the 10 plagues with which God afflicted the unbending ruler and people of Egypt. Our dear Saviour showed His mighty healing and restoration to life, teaching that He was the Messiah.

Jerusalem rejected their King even as Egypt refused to recognise the living God.

Sadly we notice that Pharoah’s entire household suffered in repulsing the true God.

‘He brought us out, that He might bring us in, to give us the land of which He swore to our fathers’ ( 23) is an amazing truth. Our heavenly Father separated them from the slave market of Egypt for a specific entrance into Israel. So He fulfilled His long-standing promise to Abraham, the father of our faith. No nation or union of such can rob God’s people of their inheritance. God designed the whole procedure, not a part only. A gangrenous appendix must be excised so that the patient shall be free to enjoy well-being. Christ’s sacrificial death brought us out of bondage into a glorious liberty in His resurrection life. The Christian has a Beulah land for eternity. .

Our Lord yearns for obedience, ‘For He commanded us to observe all. These statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is this day.’ (v24) Our Lord Jesus said 1600 years later, ‘If you love Me keep My commandments’. God did not change in His holy plan to redeem and preserve His saints in every circumstance. Oh, what comfort that He should promise to do so, and empower His saints to persevere in their godly walk. .

He imparts to us His righteousness, ‘for it will be righteousness for us if we are careful to observe all these commandments before the Lord our God’. His righteousness is then imputed to us by His death, burial, resurrection and ascension.

God’s Word has salvation code hidden in its sacred pages.
