Psalm 22 Story of the Cross. Many facets of Calvary,......My rough preaching notes.
1 My God, My God Why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me?2 Darkness over all the earth characterized the crucifixion. A holy Lord could not look upon sin
3 You are holy. Isaiah 6 displays the character of the Lord.
4 Our fathers trust in You. At the cross, they taunted God’s Son , ‘Your fathers trusted in God’.
6 I am a worm, 1 An Invertebrate. As though He Lacked back-bone: and strength of Character.
2 worms actively enrich soil, by allowing oxygen to flow through. Casts produce fertility.
3 Moth lays eggs on a tree, so that when dying , she fastened herself securely onto that tree.
Exclusive scarlet dye released, never to be erased. Christ died for us , Though your sins be scarlet, they shall be white as snow!
7 Christ was reproached, despised of people. Highlighted at Calvary.
8 Taunted at cross, he trusted in the Lord. Let Him deliver Him. Let Him deliver Him, since he delights in Him.
9 The Lord the Creator, supervised David’s birth. ‘You took Me out of the womb.’
12 Many bulls surrounded Me. Religious leaders, city officials encircled me.
13 The devil seen as a ravening and roaring lion.
14 Christ suffered dehydration, crying ’I thirst.’ A medical primary urgency supplies fluid ..
15 Loss of strength. Tongue bound Death reduces a body to dust. With Christ , No corruption.
16 Dogs encompassed . Wicked enclosed. Pierced My hands/feet, as claws of a lion penetrate, fixing the victim, who is savaged by the lion jaws. A telling picture of Calvary .
Zechariah 12:10 ‘They shall look on Me whom they pierced.’. 206 bones ???in each adult body.
18 ‘They parted my garment among them- and cast lots for my vesture’. Gambling at the cross.
22 Post resurrection I will praise you.
26 The meek are comforted.
27 All the ends of earth, namely, the kingdoms shall worship before you.
28 The kingdom is the Lord’s He is GOVERNOR among nations.
30 Each generation has its own seed.
31 His righteousness is concluding theme of this majestic psalm.
Asah is a creation term , ‘He has done this‘ or ‘It is finished‘. Psalm begins/ends with quotation from cross. Three of our Lord’s quotations while dying are listed ( including his thirst ) here.
